چکیده

Seventy-two Yorkshire boar pigs were used to study growth rate and feed efficiency in pigs weaned at 3 weeks of age and fed either casein or soy-protein as a source of supplemental protein in corn based diets. Treatments consisted of a corn-casein diet, a corn-isolated soy protein diet, a corn-ethanol extracted soy protein diet and a corn soybean meal diet. Feed intake was not affected by source of dietary protein. Average daily gain (P<.l) and feed efficiency (P<.01) were improved when casein was the source of supplemental protein. Differences in feed efficiency were not apparent after the second week post weaning resulting in a week by treatment interaction (P<.05). Ethanol extraction of soy protein resulted in no improvement in pig performance over soybean meal as a source of supplemental protein.

Improved soybean protein sources for early-weaned pigs: II. Effects on ileal amino acid digestibility.

Early-weaned gilts fitted with simple ileal T-cannulas were used to determine the effect of protein source on N and amino acid (AA) digestibility. The digestibilities of N and AA in 25- to 53-d-old pigs fed either dried skim milk (DSM), isolated soybean protein (ISP), soybean protein concentrate (SPC), or soybean meal (SBM) as the only protein source were determined. The pigs were fed semipurif...

Effects of dietary protein supply, weaning age and experimental enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli infection on newly weaned pigs: performance.

An experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of post-weaning dietary protein supply and weaning age on the performance of pigs in the absence of in-feed antimicrobial growth promoters (AGP) when artificially challenged with enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC), a pathogen associated with post-weaning colibacillosis (PWC). The experiment consisted of a complete 2 × 2 × 2 factorial c...

Effect of Dietary Glutamine Supplement on Performance and Intestinal Morphology of Weaned Pigs*

Two experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of dietary glutamine (Gln) supplement on the performance and villus morphology of weaned pigs. In Exp. 1, 48 pigs were fed diets supplemented with 0, 0.5, 1.0, or 1.5% Gln for 28 days. Dietary Gln supplemented levels did not influence performance and plasma Gln concentration of weaned pigs. In Exp. 2, 48 weaned pigs were fed the same trea...

Effects of dietary protein supply, weaning age and experimental enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli infection on newly weaned pigs: health.

Weaning is often associated with post-weaning colibacillosis (PWC), caused by enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC). The objective was to investigate the effects of manipulating dietary protein supply and increasing weaning age on enteric health and ETEC shedding of newly weaned pigs exposed to an experimental ETEC challenge. The experiment consisted of a complete 2 × 2 × 2 factorial combinat...

Impact of Providing Feed and/or Water on Performance, Physiology, and Behavior of Weaned Pigs during a 32-h Transport.

Transportation at weaning is a complex stressor made up of many factors, including withdrawal from feed and water, which can potentially negatively affect the health and welfare of pigs, especially those already experiencing weaning stress. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of weaning and extended transport durations (up to 32 h), with and without the provision of feed and/...
